TUNNELING TEAM CONQUERS THE SUEZ
The paper reports on the construction of a two-lane road tunnel that marks the first nonbridge crossing of the Suez Canal. The 1.2-mile Ahmed Hamdi tunnel is of precast concrete, segmental design, shield driven to 38.7 ft in diameter. For topographic and military reasons, the tunnel curves instead of taking a straight-line run across the canal.
