A Time Series Analysis of Social Media Utilisation by Airport Watch and HACAN Clearskies: Two UK Anti-Airport Expansion Groups

This article reports on a time series analysis study that was undertaken to explore the usage of social media by groups associated with the ongoing campaign against the Heathrow airport expansion. The authors obtained daily social media data from both NodeXL and Twitonomy. They conducted intervention analysis to study social media utilization and the groups’ preparation and response to a specific event, the 2013 Davies Commission interim report. The Davies Commission was convened by the U.K. government to consider and propose possible ways to increase airport capacity. The groups studied were Airport Watch, and HACAN (Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise) Clearskies. The authors also interviewed the social media coordinator of each group to discuss findings of the time series analysis. The findings showed that Twitter was used as a tool to disseminate findings over a longer period to give a more sustained impact whereas Facebook illustrated an instant impact only on the day of the interim report publication. The authors discuss the potential of a sustained social media campaign during a high-profile event as consistent broadcasting garners attention and enables a greater message distribution. They recommend the employment of a dedicated social media expert to take control of social media content.
