ONE STEP FURTHER

The most striking recent example of a modular computerized control system purpose-built for a container terminal application is the system installed at the Matson terminals in Los Angeles and Richmond, California. In deciding to automate the handling operations at these two terminals -- for which TAK Components was a major supplier -- Matson had as its objective the routine meeting or surpassing by the computer of the peak performance of its best operators operating under ideal conditions rather than the elimination of manpower. How TAK Components achieved this objective, by adopting a "distributed" approach which has taken the design of machine control systems one step further for container terminals is discussed in the article.
