ICE MODEL TESTS AND COMPUTER SIMULATION OF PROPELLER-ICE IMPACTS OF A POLAR RESEARCH SHIP

In support of the final design of a polar research vessel, a series of ice model tests and propulsion machinery simulations were conducted to confirm the ice worthiness features of the vessel. ... Design specifications for each component of the propulsion system were developed based on the results of the simulation. Results of the two phase program indicated that the proposed design, with minor modifications, is sufficiently ice-worthy to operate safely and effectively in the design ice conditions. (Author)
