This paper presents a hypothesis relating iceberg draft to the maximum horizontal dimension of the iceberg in the waterline plane. This dimension is called iceberg length and is readily obtainable with standard shipboard equipment (e.g., radar and sextant). The hypothesis is tested with measured iceberg drafts which were measured with various sonar devices. The hypothesis is also evaluated on the basis of stability analyses for several idealized iceberg shapes. (Author)
