REINVENTING THE WHEEL: THE FAILURE TO UTILIZE EXISTING TECHNOLOGY
The article illustrates how the valuable dynamic knowledge base that is available through computerized data bases is repeatedly ignored. More often than not, limited and dated sources of information are used in engineering work, with the result that we are constantly reinventing the wheel, falling further behind in the worldwide competition for technical eminence and exposing ourselves to unnecessary equipment failures and defects. To remedy these short-comings, the author advocates a reassessment of priorities and a switch from an object centered approach to a dynamic knowledge-based perspective.
