British Shipbuilders is well placed in terms of R and D. Drawing upon its own resources and the expertise of BSRA, many improvements have taken place in shipyard technology, product design, and shipboard studies. In this article, compiled from interviews by The Motor Ship with Mr. A. Smith, BS director of technology, and Dr. P. Milne, BS divisional managing director of the engineering division, current programmes are discussed as well as findings from long-term projects. Project areas discussed include: computer aided design and production, ship design development, coal-fired ships, propulsion systems, shipboard vibration problems, hull roughness, shipboard automation, maneuverability, fuels, and operating costs.
