PRODUCTION FUNCTION AND CHANGING TECHNOLOGY FOR WATER TRANSPORT: SOME EMPIRICAL RESULTS

The author deals with the technological innovations that were made in all elements of the water-carrier industry in the United States. Among the most important innovations were: the power, speed and maneuverability of towboats; design, size and arrangement of barges in the tow; automation of many functions and adoption of communication devices; improvement of navigation channels and lock design; and new and improved terminal facilities with specialized cargo handling equipment.
