SUPPLY BOAT MOTION, DYNAMIC RESPONSE AND FATIGUE OF OFFSHORE CRANES

The dynamics of offshore cranes have been investigated by means of finite element methods using a specially developed computer program. It is shown how recognised theories for ships' responses in irregular waves can be applied in a statistical approach for determining the vertical deck velocity for derating purposes. Methods for determining the fatigue life of offshore cranes based on the different types of load-cycles are presented. The paper concludes with some practical considerations of the application of the theories to the design and operation of offshore cranes.
