MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT: FROM COMPETITION TO COOPERATION
The author describes techniques used for multimodal transport and goes on to analyse the development of combined rail-road transport in France. He points out the advantages of the system for the trucker, the State, local communities and even car drivers, and describes measures taken by the authorities to develop combined transport, such as financial support and tariff incentives. In conclusion he points to the marked growth of piggyback and container traffic in recent years.
