THE "BITUMEN PITCH 281" BINDER AND ITS APPLICATIONS

LE LIANT "BITUME BRAI 281" ET SES APPLICATIONS

The author gives details of the bitumen pitch 281 binder which comprises 80% of coal. Its physical and physicochemical characteristics are described together with its use in conventional bituminous mixes, in thin maintenance mixes (accorug), and in mixes used for levelling. This article states that this binder is easy to use and does not require special precautions when being utilized. It can be stored without any trouble in tanks having previously contained bitumen. It permits a saving in temperature when laying, and makes laying and compaction easier. Its mechanical properties are comparable to those of a 60/70 bitumen, but high adhesion, resistance to water, deicing salt and studded tyres makes it ideally suited to winter conditions. (TRRL)
