FAILURE OF AN EXPERIMENTAL EMBANKMENT ON A SLOPE AT SALLEDES (PUY-DE-DOME)

RUPTURE D'UN REMBLAI EXPERIMENTAL SUR VERSANT A SALLEDES (PUY-DE-DOME)

This short article briefly describes the observations made on an embankment tested to failure point on a slope at salledes. The main conclusions can be summarized as follows: (1) it is essential to have accurate and reliable surveillance systems so as to be able to grasp the mechanism of such failures; (2) the calculated stability forecasts of the "short-term failure" type are very often proved wrong because the slope was initially unstable and the excess pore water pressure is much lower than a constant-volume deformation could have led to think. Only a calculation of the effective stresses, carried out a posteriori and based on residual strength and the pore water pressures observed, led to the determination of an acceptable safety coefficient.
