CONTROL OF THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A BORED PILE IN BEAUCE LIMESTONE

CONTROLE DE LA PORTANCE D'UN PIEU FORE DANS LES CALCAIRES DE BEAUCE

This article gives the results of a loading test on a large diameter pile cast-in-situ in beauce limestone which had been injected because of its karstic nature. The object of the test was to verify the real bearing capacity of the pile in which faulty workmanship had been detected in the tip by means of sonic and mechanical core sampling. The test was carried out on a pile fitted with two sets of detachable strain gauges placed in non-destructive testing tubes. The maximum load reached at the end of the test was 7000 kn. Strain gauge measurements within the pile showed the importance of lateral friction along the shaft perpendicular to the injected limestone layer. The interpretation of these measurements confirmed the presence of the defect in the tip. Based on all the results obtained a method of repair was proposed, that guaranteed the satisfactory behaviour of all the piles. (TRRL)
