MEASUREMENT OF THE BULK DENSITY OF PAVEMENT ROADBASES. USE OF THE GDM 45

MESURE DES MASSES VOLUMIQUES DES COUCHES D'ASSISES DE CHAUSSEES - UTILISATION DU GDM 45

The 45 (gdm 45) mobile gammadensitometer is a unit designed to make continuous measurements of the absolute values of the bulk density of roadbases, 15 to 20 cm thick. It can be used on all types of roadbase: non-stabilized gravel and sand and gravel and sand stabilized with bituminous or hydraulic binders. The non-destructive measurement principle which it uses is based on the compton phenomenon of the scattering of gamma rays by matter: the radioactive source and the detector are placed on the surface of the layer. The gdm 45 was used in the different stages of controlling road construction operations: on experimental sections for verifying the output of the plant and on the reference sections to obtain density values which will be utilized as control values in later density controls. Random controls will also be conducted, the results of which will be compared to those obtained on the reference section with a view to detecting possible deviations in the operation of the compaction plant. The electronic equipment with which the gdm 45 is equipped was designed so as to facilitate the automated processing of the measurements and to obtain directly on site data immediately usable by the contractor.
