ACTIVE SAFETY AND ACCIDENT STUDIES

AKTIVE SICHERHEIT UND UNFALLUNTERSUCHUNGEN

The article reports on papers presented at the fisita congress which dealt with demands made by the driver on his vehicle and with evaluation criteria, under the broad heading of active safety. All authors agreed that it will be a long time before vehicle parameters which are important for the driver/vehicle system can be better evaluated and that it is still very difficult to apply the results of pure test rig experiments to real traffic events. Individual results indicate a general trend of drivers adapting to the characteristics of vehicles; on the other hand vehicle characteristics may be modified through the influence of the driver, for example in side winds. The second group of delegates dealt with the evaluation of handling and braking behaviour, and the third group with a study of the extent to which active safety has contributed to a decrease in real risk.
