DER GOTTHARD-STRASSENTUNNEL - LAENGSTER STRASSENTUNNEL DER WELT

The paper describes the most important equipment of the 16.3 km long gotthard road tunnel, which was opened 5th September 1980. Particular attention is paid to the safety provisions: safety gallery running parallel to the tunnel 30 M away; around the clock traffic surveillance; traffic control and observation by means of numerous signals; 80 television cameras; a command centre with monitors; tunnel radio and energy supply; and ventilation and lighting which can be adapted to traffic conditions at any given time. Alarm boxes or sos stations, which are in direct contact with the command centre are positioned every 125 M in niches for use in emergency situations by road users. (TRRL)
