FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF CATALYTIC SYSTEMS FOR THE OBSERVANCE OF STRICTER EXHAUST STANDARDS IN CARS

WEITERENTWICKLUNG KATALYTISCHER SYSTEME ZUR EINHALTUNG VERSCHAERFTER ABGASSTANDARDS FUER AUTOMOBILMOTOREN

Stricter exhaust values in the USA require improved purification systems with multi-functional catalysts. By increasing the number of cells in the ceramic body of the catalyst, the cross sectional area of the channel can be reduced and the surface area increased, which positively affects the reaction function. A further possibility for the improvement of exhaust gases is provided by the use of A starting catalyst. This allows an improvement in the control of the mix, which again is favourable to the functioning of the main catalyst and thereby leads to A higher degree of efficiency. Furthermore the starting catalyst produces an additional reduction of vehicle emission during the starting phase, which leads to an improvement in the heating-up of the complete system. Additional effects can be achieved by doping the multi-functional catalysts containing precious metals with additional components. In addition the newly developed catalyst possesses a better ageing process and reduces fuel consumption by ca. 1.2 to 1.5%. (TRRL)
