THE USE OF NON-WOVEN MATERIALS IN ASPHALT ROAD PAVEMENTS. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

Polyester spun non-woven materials (Heidelberger non-wovens) are usable without question at temperatures up to 200 deg C. The chemical composition ensures protection from decay and stability in conditions where sea-water and chemicals are present, almost no shrinkage from heat (e.g. length 0.3%; transverse 0% at 200 C/2 min) and optimal water penetration. Decisive for its use in asphalt roads is the fact that a genuine bonding takes place with the under layer and the course laid above it, so that loading can be received and distributed. Non-woven materials may be used, inter alia, when covering cracked asphalt surfaces, deteriorating concrete decks, out-of-date sett pavings, road widening and for the construction of new roads or the reconstruction of old ones with unstable sub-soils. Polyester non-woven may be unrolled by hand on an under-layer, previously sprayed with road bitumen b80 or b200, and then rolled; 15 cm overlaps should be made between widths. Additional costs amount to 2.50 dm/m2; in the trial works the cost of the non-woven material and its laying came to 6% of the total. (TRRL)
