A MEASURING TECHNIQUE FOR OBTAINING THE HYDRAULIC ROUGHNESS OF CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES

The finer shape of the surface (roughness) of a carriageway slab considerably influences the flow-out behaviour of water from the instant contact area between the carriageway and vehicle tyre grip (hydraulic roughness). For the assessment of these processes an intermittently operating profile contact apparatus and a new type of area-related flow-out apparatus were developed. With these it is possible to describe the surface shape and the flow-out capabilities of this over a wide area of measurement covering many normally occurring carriageway surfaces. By additionally measuring the depth of rubber penetration a good correlative relationship was shown between surface roughness and the effect of this on drainage behaviour. For the determination of an average performance coefficient for the flow-out apparatus the costs of measuring and recording were considerably reduced, so that an alternative to previously adopted flow-out measuring devices (of the Moore construction type) can be introduced, which provides more information.
