IMPACT OF TRANSPORTATION ON THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

The article examines two conceived dimensions that capture the essence of the dynamic interdependency between transportation and the welfare of the central business district (CBD). The role of changing transportation technology and its impact on the rise and fall of CBDs is discussed within the context of an evolutionary dimension. The impact of transportation on the CBD is examined from a functional perspective that includes: an evaluation of the current status of and need for the different modes of CBD transport (walking, automobile, and transit), and a discussion of the interaction between the transportation system and economic, political, cultural, and social activities within the CBD.
