PROPULSOR COMPARISON TESTS IN URBAN TRAFFIC

PROVE DI CONFRONTO DI PROPULSORI NEL TRAFFICO URBANO

Standard methods of fuel-consumption measurement using predictable operating cycles and dynamometer benches do not represent actual conditions of use, nor do they permit reliable comparison between one type of car and another. Extensive testing with a large fleet over a variety of road distances under diverse traffic conditions, on the other hand, would be very costly and time-consuming. To be able to compare different engines at the design stage, it would be advantageous to have available a method which, without having the shortcomings of dynamometer testing, guarantees high reliability in comparing different vehicles/engines at low cost and with the maximum freedom of driving in traffic. The method described, developed in the context of road-testing of internal combustion engines with cylinder disablement, and research into modular engines, can be applied to all types of propulsion unit and was developed with the aim of enabling direct comparisons to be made between different vehicles in urban-traffic fuel-consumption measurement.
