THE MERCURY POROSITY METER APPLIED TO THE GEOTECHNICAL STUDY OF SOIL AND ROCK

LA POROSIMETRIE AU MERCURE APPLIQUEE A L'ETUDE GEOTECHNIQUE DES SOLS ET DES ROCHES

A detailed analysis of porosity is often necessary to obtain a better understanding or to forecast the various types of behaviour of natural or synthetic materials. The mercury-injection porosity meter is one of the methods of indirect analysis for porous media. This technique has been known for a long time in some branches of earth sciences and seems to offer powerful possibilities to the geology engineer provided that some technological improvements are made and a better interpretation of results is ensured. The author outlines the modifications to the techniques that are required and describes the possibilities and limits of mercury injection on the basis of 5-year experience on very diverse materials. Mention is made of some examples of applications, and it is shown how porosity measurements can be used in conjunction with other tests of indirect identification of structure. (TRRL)
