RO-RO VERSUS LO-LO: A MATTER OF SCALE
This article represents an attempt to examine the underlying cost structures of the two competing modes of unitized transport, to consider whether the causes for the changing market shares lie in resource costs rather than marketing attributes. The article distinguishes between the various forms of unitized transport services in three ways: (a) their technology; (b) whether units are accompanied or unaccompanied; and (c) whether the ship operator sells a through-transport service or simply space aboard his vessel(s).
