DUNKERQUE EXPANSION-A CHALLENGE TO ROTTERDAM'S SUPREMACY
With the requirement to expand its facilities to meet anticipated coal import increases, reduce waiting time at the port and service the largest ore carriers the Port Autonome De Dunkerque (PAD) is to construct a new Fr. 254 million ore/coal import terminal at its western harbour. Already named the Quai Paul Reynaud the new terminal will be expanded in two phases with the first berth completed by end 1982 and capable of handling vessels up to 185,000dwt. Second phase development will follow rapidly and involve further deepening to accommodate vessels of 250,000dwt+; a development that may be seen as a direct challenge to Rotterdam's present position as the only north west European port offering such deep water facilities.
