A METHOD OF ESTIMATING THE CLOSURE AND STRENGTH OF LINING REQUIRED IN DRIVAGES SURROUNDED BY A YIELD ZONE
It is suggested that the theories of terzaghi are not applicable to soft rocks at depths, and an alternative means of calculating the lining strengths required in drivages is sought. A yield zone is considered to develop around the excavation with an elastic zone beyond. The resultant stress field is discussed. The expansion of rock in the yield zone is approximated, which allows a formula to be developed linking the roadway closure to the properties of the rock and the strength of the lining. Further investigation of some of the parameters is suggested, but even in its present form the formula gives information of much greater relevance than the methods previously used.(a) (TRRL)
