THE AUTOMATIC NON-LINEAR ANALYSIS OF STIFFENED PLATES AND SHALLOW SHELLS USING FINITE ELEMENTS

The paper describes the development of an efficient automatic finite element program for the non-linear analysis of imperfect stiffened steel plates and shallow shells. Material and geometric non-linearities are considered. The new features include an accelerated modified Newton-Raphson method that is automatic and can be applied in the elastic and elastoplastic regimes, an approximate yield function (based on that due to Ivanov) which is a function of the six stress resultants and the equivalent plastic curvature, and a simple procedure for automatically selecting the increment sizes. The method is applied to the large-deflexion analysis of elastic and elastoplastic structures. (Author/TRRL)
