LASERS IN CONSTRUCTION

Although laser-based surveying equipment is widely used in the USA, West Germany and the middle east, the UK construction industry is said to be slow to accept the use of such equipment. Three types of construction lasers are considered - laser theodolites, rotating head lasers and laser beam land levelling equipment. In addition to theodolite applications, simple single beam lasers are invaluable for tunnelling and pipelaying work. It is considered that laser control can save some 15% bed material by preventing an excavator from over-digging. In addition as there is no need for setting up profiles, an overall 10% labour saving can be achieved. (TRRL)
