NCB TESTS MINESTONE FOR REINFORCED SOIL

This short article describes a trial reinforced earth structure being built in a Leicestershire colliery by the National Coal Board, designed to prove the suitability of minestone for this form of construction. Precast units from the wall containing the minestone, the straps from the wall into the fill being of standard galvanised steel with pull-out test facilities. Strain gauges and thermocouples are attached to the straps, and piezometers will monitor the level of the water table. A further 800 straps of various materials will be buried in an adjoining embankment and subjected to tests every six months. (TRRL)
