THE FUTURE OF INTERLOCKING CONCRETE BLOCK PAVEMENTS FOR ROADS

The paper presents a summary of important aspects of interlocking block pavements which could lead to their greater use in road construction. The application of block pavements are categorised into two groups - (a) in parking and terminus areas, and (b) in low-speed routes in urban housing developments, bus routes and vehicle turning areas. The riding quality of block pavements for a range of applications are defined and tabulated. Pavement design aspects are detailed for different types of construction - pavements with a granular sub-base; pavements with a granular and cemented sub-base; and, pavements with a cemented sub-base. Finally, the design of block pavements according to traffic loading classifications is detailed. (TRRL)
