LATERAL RESPONSE OF BATTER PILES AND PILE BENTS IN CLAY

A model study using 9.5 mm diameter and 36 cm long aluminium pipe piles has been carried out in clay of soft consistency. Single piles with batter angles ranging from 0 degrees to plus or minus 30 degrees and pile bents of 0 degrees to plus or minus 30 degrees have been tested. Horizontal load is applied, in increments, on the pile head close to the ground surface and the horizontal displacements are recorded. The results are presented and a comparison between the lateral response of vertical and batter piles is made. The study reveals that a pile with negative batter is more resistant, whereas a pile with positive batter is less resistant to lateral load as compared to vertical piles. It is also observed that pile bents with vertical and batter piles (either having negative batter or positive batter) offer more resistance as compared to bents with vertical piles only.
