APPLICATION OF PHOTOGRAPHY TO TRAFFIC SURVEYS

There is a real need among traffic engineers, not only for more data, but for data of a more complex nature, in order to improve their understanding of traffic trends and the effects of changes in the existing infrastructure on these trends. While traditional ground survey methods seem incapable of keeping abreast of these expanding data needs, photographic techniques have the potential to do so, particularly when combined with modern co-ordinate reader and computer technologies. Although traffic data has been collected by photographic means for more than 50 years, the techniques, in spite of their advantages, have never become generally accepted. The major problem has always been the difficulties associated with extracting and analysing the vast quantities of data available from photographs. This paper presents a review of the types of photography available and the traffic data which may be collected from it, together with the techniques available for extracting the information from the photography. A comprehensive bibliography is included for further reference to specific techniques. (TRRL)
