WIDENING OF THE RHINE RIVER BRIDGE AT COLOGNE-DEUTZ. APPLICATION OF PRE-STRESSED LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE CONCRETE

The design, construction procedure and technological requirements are described. A prestressed concrete superstructure constructed by the free cantilever method was built alongside the original steel structure, having identical profile and span widths, and resting on Pier extensions. The individual spans are 132, 184 and 121 M long. Both class b55 prestressed normal-weight and class lb45 prestressed lightweight concrete were used, the latter within a section of the centre span, 62 M long. The selection of materials, the processing of the concrete and the quality test results are discussed. After being under traffic for some months, the structure was moved by jacks into its final position. (TRRL)
