The use of microprocessors facilitates a new type of instrumentation. The concept of the BMW on-board computer arose following a basic analysis of driver demands for more information, safety and comfort. The computer has been jointly developed with siemens and is now ready for mass production. The system, its 15 functions, the basic software procedures and the most important system components such as the operating unit with its push button area and digital display are described, together with the central electronics and the SAB 8049 microcomputer.
