DEFECTIVE LORRIES NOT RETURNED FOR REPAIR

Details are given of the response of UK vehicle owners to recall requests from manufacturers for fault correction. Department of Transport data indicates the difference in attitude of car owners compared to that of lorry and van operators to such recall notices. Of over 57000 cars recalled in six separate campaigns between July and September 1979 some 78% of affected vehicles were actually returned. Over the same period during which there were ten recalls for commercial vehicles, the response rate was only 46%. The implications of this difference in attitude are evaluated. (TRRL)
