SPRINGSWEEP-AN ADVANCE IN SURFACE OIL CATCHING TECHNIQUES

The Springsweep system uses the Swedish patented Troilboom to give a high and continuous oil encounter rate to a powerful suction unit, all readily mountable on a single ship, this avoiding the station keeping problems of multiple vessel arrangements. The Troilboom system actually funnels the oil towards the suction head (capacity 40 cum per hour) by being towed not from points on the boom itself, but from a bridle wire running inside the curve of the boom and from which the skirt-like boom is loosely rigged. Springsweep's place in UK pollution abatement policy is discussed.
