ROTTERDAM HOLDS OUT AGAINST THE MED WHILE NEW YORK LOSES TO THREE COASTS

Analysis of container traffic trends in Europe and North America reveals that Rotterdam and New York, the respective area leaders, have experienced contrasting fortunes since 1970. Rotterdam, which is approaching the two million TEU-mark, has increased on its 1970 European market share in the face of the Mediterranean container boom which followed the re-opening of Suez in 1975. New York, however, has peaked at around 1.75 million TEU, and faces growing competition from the US South Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, as well as from its North Atlantic Coast neighbors.
