GEARED DIESEL DRIVE FOR GERMANY'S NEW POLAR RESEARCH SHIP

The vessel is being built as a joint venture by the Kiel yard of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (supplying the hull) and Werft Nobiskrug, of Rendsburg (fitting out). Preliminary designs were produced by the Hamburgische Schiffbau Versuchsanstalt (HSVA) in close cooperation with Schiffko (ship and scientific equipment) and A. G. Weser, Bremen (marine engineering). The vessel, due for completion in Autumn 1982, will be the first ship from a yard in the Federal Republic of Germany built to Canadian ice class 7. All systems of the ship will be operational at -30 deg C and--in case the vessel should be trapped by ice and have to remain there during the winter--it can survive at -50 deg C, and for this a special survival zone is provided. The hull was developed from extensive tests in the ice tank of HSVA and is based on experience gained from a test voyage into the Arctic with the supply vessel "Werdertor". The new vessel will be capable of continuously breaking one metre thick ice and ramming through two metre thick ice. The two Excher-Wyss stainless steel c.p. propellers will run in nozzles to protect them against damage from large ice floes. The main engines will be four Deutz RBVM540 eight-cylinder engines, each of 4,800 bhp, arranged to burn 200 sec Redwood viscosity fuel. Each engine pair is connected via an oil-operated clutch to a Renk double reduction gearbox reducing engine speed from 650 rev/min to 180 rev/min. A power take-off drive is provided on each gearbox for a 2,500 kVA, 660 V, 50 Hz alternator of AEG manufacture. Electrical power when in port or when the main engines are stopped will be provided by two MaK M332AK eight-cylinder engines of 1,750 bhp driving two 1,500 kVA AEG alternators at 750 rev/min. The 500 kW emergency alternator is a Deutz-powered AEG unit of 680 hp at 1,500 rev/min. Manoeuvrability of the ship is enhanced by fitting two KaMeWa 1,500 hp c.p. transverse thrusters; located at the stern and bow.
