SOME MAINTENANCE MEASURES FOR ROAD BRIDGES

ALCUNI INTERVENTI DI MANUTENZIONE DI PONTI STRADALI

This article deals with the problems of erosion at the base of bridge piers, caused by water currents. Countermeasures including filling the hole with small gravel, larger gravel and then large rocks (Terzaghi's so-called upside-down filter). Care should be taken not to use too many large rocks as this could cause obstruction and accelerate the damage. Protection can also be achieved with tied bundles of wooden stakes as practised in the USA. In cases of emergency sacks filled with medium sized gravel can be lowered into the hole upstream of the pier. Very advanced erosion can be counteracted by underpinning or stays driven into the body of the pile. Some examples of maintenance measures against erosion in Italy, are illustrated. (TRRL)
