FEDERAL BARGE LINES COAL TRANSFER TERMINAL AT CORA, ILL., BEGINS OPERATIONS; BYPASSES BOTTLENECK ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER AT ALTON
A new high-speed rail-to-barge coal transfer terminal with a capacity of up to 15 million tons a year is now in operation on the Mississippi River at Cora, Ill., 80 miles south of St. Louis. The facility was designed and built by Dravo Corporation of Pittsburgh for Houston Natural Gas Company, (HNG) and will be operated by Federal Barge Lines, an HNG subsidiary. The terminal can load barges at a rate of 5,700 tons an hour through a barge-haul in a single pass. loads a continuous string of five barges in a single pass. Federal Barge Lines tows serving the terminal will have a capacity of up to 45,000 tons.
