CONCRETE ROADS; WHY ARE CONCRETE PAVEMENTS OF CURRENT INTEREST?

BETONG I VEGER; HVORFOR ER BETONGDEKKER AKTUELLE?

What particularly characterizes concrete pavements are high construction costs and low maintenance costs. In Norway ordinary concrete pavements have not been used to any great extent for economic reasons, although some stretches of concrete roads were already built before World War II. The problem has been to find a kind of surface which will stand up to heavy wear from studded tyres and salt. Lately there have been some technological developments which seem to solve these problems, too. The article explains the situation today concerning use of concrete pavements in Norway, and predict that concrete has a future in this country, primarily as a surface material in tunnels, city streets, junctions with heavy traffic, and for bus stops. Precast concrete paving blocks may represent a preferable solution here. (TRRL)
