THE BMW ON BOARD COMPUTER

DER BMW BORDCOMPUTER

The author deals with the use of the on-board minicomputer for providing additional information to drivers. The basis of the concept is that the additional information should be provided in such a way that the driver accepts it as sensible and does not ignore possibly important announcements because he is overwhelmed with information. The report summarizes the results of a one year trial undertaken in a car manufacturing firm. The on board computer comprises 12 double functions and 5 subsidiary functions derived from them. These include time of day, temperature (danger of black ice), distance to the next destination, arrival time, speed (warning tone if it is exceeded), consumption. A description is given of the whole trial. (TRRL)
