TEACHERS' REACTIONS TO CURRICULUM MATERIALS IN ROAD SAFETY

The article describes the results derived from trial teachers' questionnaires to evaluate the material included in the "children and traffic" series of books, published in 1977, at the conclusion of a large scale road safety education research project sponsored by TRRL. The study was to investigate the impact on road safety teaching on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of pupils, and the reaction of teachers to the project's material. Information was received from a total of 109 trial teachers from a variety of infant, junior and middle schools of different organisation, neighbourhood and type of traffic outside the school. Most teachers supported the project's philosophy and approach and had successfully adapted the material to suit the abilities of their pupils. Children enjoyed the work and it was thought that the series made a valuable contribution to road safety education. Details are given of the teachers opinion and comments, some of which were used in revising the series. (TRRL)
