A PROPOSAL FOR RESEARCH INTO THE MENTAL CAUSES OF HUMAN ERROR IN ROAD ACCIDENTS

PROPOSTA DI INDAGINE SULLE CAUSE PSICHICA DELL'ERRORE UMANO NEGLI INCIDENT STRADALI

Istat statistics show that in 1978 there were 263674 road accidents in Italy (in which there was police intervention), resulting in 7965 deaths (within 7 days of the accident) and 207556 injured. In researching the mental component of human error in accidents this article proposes a six-point approach to the analysis of the man/environment interaction: three with reference to the man (the remote aspect, the concomitant aspect, and the dynamics of the accident); and three with reference to the environment, similarly named but of different nature and content. Spatial and temporal values are analyzed to determine "limit behaviour" and "maximum prudence behaviour" in the driving task in hazard situations. (TRRL)
