LIGHTING INSTALLATIONS ON MAIN TRAFFIC ROADS AND HIGH CAPACITY ROADS IN THE CANTON OF ZURICH

The author proposes arguments in favour of lighting highways. Using accident research he shows that the accident rate between 18.00 to 6.00 hours is 4.5 times as great as in other periods. From a financial evaluation of accident damage on illuminated and non-illuminated roads he calculates a lighting benefit rate of 8-20 Swiss francs per 100 vehicle kilometres. Advice is given about the choice of intensity of illumination, the distance between lamps, light source and operation. For energy conservation lighting installations with variable light intensity can be used. From Zurich canton an example is shown in which traffic concentration, horizontal visibility and road conditions due to weather conditions are shown. Following this the appropriate lighting level is established by computer. (TRRL)
