KRAFT SAFE-DRIVING PROGRAMME - A RAY OF HOPE IN ROAD SAFETY WORK

KRAFT-FAHR-SICHERHEITS-PROGRAMM - EIN LICHTBLICK IN DER VERKEHRSSICHERHEITSARBEIT -

The firm of Kraft at Eschborn near Frankfurt has successfully taken measures to reduce the number of accidents to its vehicles. An internal safety programme has been in operation since 1957. The mileage of the 192 vehicles owned by the firm amounted in 1956 to 5.1 million km. These vehicles were involved in 202 accidents of which 103 were avoidable. The accident rate was 2.02 per 100000 km. In 1977 this was reduced to 0.32. By this time the fleet had grown to 580 cars and 80 lorries. The success can be traced back to the following measures: careful selection of drivers, minimum age limit 23 years and two year driving practice, medical examination for driving fitness, driving tests by the company, group training with exchange of experience and accident analyses, competitions and prizes for accident-free driving.
