KFT ASSESSMENT: AIR DEFLECTORS (LLE) AS A MEANS OF FUEL SAVINGS WHEN TRAVELLING WITH CAMPING TRAILERS

One of the criteria for the effectiveness of an air deflector unit (LLE) is defined in the article as follows: the deflected non-turbulent air stream should touch the roof of the following higher portion of the bodywork with the so-called discontinuity line. In the test described a deflector plate was fixed to the rear portion of a towing vehicle, the angle of incidence was about 65 degrees, and the plate was approximately 400 mm high. Road tests were conducted with this test vehicle to determine fuel consumption and performance. The test results showed that the fitting of the deflector resulted in a clear reduction of the air resistance. This was expressed in a higher top speed and improved acceleration. The average fuel consumption with the reflector dropped from 14,2 to 12,6 l/100 km. This offers an effective possibility of energy saving. (TRRL)
