INVESTIGATION INTO THE ALIGNMENT, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF ROADS IN WATER PROTECTION AND CATCHMENT AREAS

UNTERSUCHUNG UEBER LINIENFUEHRUNG, BAU UND UNTERHALTUNG VON STRASSEN IN WASSERSCHUTZ- UND WASSERGEWINNUNGSGEBIETEN

The research work has as its basis (1) the specification for drinkable water protection areas by the Laender Working Party on Water and the German Association of Gas and Water Specialists and (2) the Memorandum on Constructional Measures for Roads in Water Catchment Areas, 1971 edition, published by the Highway Research Institute. After a note on the necessity for protection and the dangers to water supplies there follows a collection of the legal rudiments affecting protected catchment areas, in connection with which the significance of the specialist literature mentioned is discussed. Following this, scientific, hygienic and technical aspects which need to be noted when organizing protected areas are described. The section "principles for the planning and design of roads" considers the principles which must be considered even in the planning stage of a road in the various protected catchment areas. The technical measures described should ensure the protection of waters from pollutant effects. Further sections consider measures to be used during the construction stages by highway undertakings and maintenance measures, as well as the costs for the replacement of capacity losses in water catchments.
