INCREASED SAFETY ON BENDS THROUGH IMPROVING OPTICAL ALIGNMENT

MEHR SICHERHEIT IN KURVEN DURCH VERBESSERUNG DER OPTISCHEN VERKEHRSFUEHRUNG

Road bends with their frequent lack of visibility are a frequent cause of accidents. To help the driver adjust his driving and speed to the bend there are important optical aids such as bend signs, direction boards and road markings. Since however accidents still occur on bends, the author proposed an improved measure: use of reflectors on marker posts. If the reflectors on the marker posts before and on the bend were inclined in accordance with the expected further course of the bend, this would provide the road user with a continuous guide to the shape of the bend. This guide would function in difficult conditions such as darkness, fog, snow on the road, and would always be visible to the driver. (TRRL)
