The Basics of Micromobility and Related Motorized Devices for Personal Transport

This information brief from the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center examines the various types of powered personal micromobility devices used on paved roads, sidewalks, and paths. Powered micromobility devices share the following characteristics: they are motorized; they operate at low speed, and they are small in size. Terms related to these devices are: dockless devices, shared-use devices, and electric-assist devices. There are three categories of powered micromobility devices: electric scooters (standing or sitting); electric bicycles; and other. Related transportation modes not classified as micromobility devices are mobility scooters, golf carts, mopeds/scooters, and motorcycles/scooters.
