Technological advances made by the container industry in the field of the development of special container types to meet specific transport requirements were reviewed in the papers presented on the second day of the CARGO SYSTEMS Third Container Technology Conference. Container types looked at included folding flatracks, tank containers, air containers and temperature controlled and ventilated equipment designed for the carriage of sensitive cargoes. While the debate following these presentations was at times lively, it was, however, the presentation on how the container industry can avoid some of the pitfalls experienced by other industries over the enforcement of patent laws and the inter-relationship between patent rights and standardisation that generated the most debate.
